Due to iron ore supply issues, JSW SteelÂ’s Vijayanagar plant in Karnataka is currently running at 85 per cent capacity utilisation level. While the Supreme Court has approved the opening of 115 Category A and B iron ore mines in Karnataka, only 15 are up and running.

Tatas wind power projects
Tata Power is setting up 160 MW wind projects throughout the country. Tata Power already has an installed wind energy generation capacity of 398 MW with projects across Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. From wind projects, the company saw its electricity generation rose 43 per cent to 813 million units in the year ended March 2013 from 569 million units in the previous year.
Port to come up at Honnavar at Rs 600 cr
A new port in Karnataka's Honnavar has been planned by the State government at a cost of Rs 600 crore under the public private partnership (PPP) model. Foundation stone to the port will be laid in November next. And the State government also plans to build a protection wall along its coastline at a cost of Rs 950 crore.
State Bank of Mysore to open 101 branches
Subsidiary of State-owned SBI, State Bank of Mysore (SBM) will open 101 branches in the country on October 5 to commemorate its centenary celebrations this year. It will open seven new branches in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts of Karnataka on October 5.

Commuters demand repairs to Udupi-Manipal road
According to the Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) in Karnataka, 116 kilometres of roads in Manipal town, coming under the CMC, are badly damaged. The stretch between Tiger Circle and Syndicate Circle on Udupi-Manipal Road is damaged at Tiger Circle, Manipal Bus Stand area in front of Manipal Post Office and Syndicate Circle. Parts of Kallinapur-Santhekatte to Udyavara stretch on National Highway 66, which passes through Udupi, are also damaged.

Poor quality iron ore affects steel makers in Karnataka
Due to supply of poor quality iron ore, steel manufacturers in Karnataka have been facing several difficulties like sharp rise in cost of operations, maintenance shutdowns. The supply of low-grade and sub-grade iron ore has also resulted in higher consumption of coke in steel making, as well as affecting the life of their blast furnaces, say media reports.
Govt nod to Kollegal-Kerala border highway expansion
