Iron ore shipments up 154percent through Major Ports
Iron ore cargo through Major Ports has logged the sharpest growth among all commodities in the April-December period. Till the end of December, iron ore shipments were up from 12.7 million tonnes (MT) to 32.4 MT, a rise of 154 per cent.

Major Ports in India handled 315.4 MT of cargo during the first six months of FY2016-17 (April-September) and showed a positive growth of 5.1 per cent as compared to the same period last year. This improvement of performance is the result of many measures initiated by the Ministry of Shipping to improve the performance of the ports.

Cargo throughput up by 2.59% to 277 mt
In India's major ports the cargo throughput grew 2.59 per cent to 277 million tonne (mt) in first half of the present financial thanks to the growth at Ennore, Paradip and New Mangalore, said the agency Icra on December 11. Coal imports, petroleum oil and lubricants (POL), and fertilisers drove the volume growth, while iron ore and container volume dragged the overall growth, Icra said.
Water transport workers fret over dip in traffic growth
Over the negative traffic growth in major ports in the country, the Water Transport Workers Federation of India has expressed concern and said the situation is not a healthy trend at a time when the ports are adding additional capacities.
