Major ports’ container volume falls in 1st half
Container volume at major ports in India tumbled 4.5 per cent year-over-year in the first half of fiscal year 2013-14, but total cargo throughput was up 2.3 per cent, according to preliminary figures released by the Indian Ports Association (IPA).
Ennore Port registers 59% rise in cargo
In handling cargo, during the first half of this financial year, Ennore Port has achieved the fastest growth rate among all major ports with a 59 per cent increase.
Cargo at major ports up by 2% in Apr-Sept period
In the first half of current financial year,
cargo handled at IndiaÂ’s 12 major ports rose by 2.3 per cent, due to a whopping 44 per cent jump in power-grade coal imports. The government-owned ports handled 277 million tonne (mt) of cargo against 270 mt during the same period last fiscal.
Cargo demands to persist in ports: ICRA
Due to sluggish progress in iron ore and container volumes, cargo pressure will persist at major ports, said rating agency ICRA. Iron ore has been the main laggard in the first 5 months (April-August) of this fiscal year, ICRA said.
Imported coal stocks at major ports up by 2%
Imported coal stocks at 16 major ports in India stood at 10.2 million tonne (mt) on September 28, Intercocean Group data showed. Interocean Group is a a Delhi-based shipbroker. The imported coal stocks at the major ports is up by 2 per cent from a week earlier.

Average turnaround and pre-berthing time for ships declined 7 per cent and 11 per cent, respectively at major ports during April and May 2013. Indian ports face dredging problems
Media reports say that Indian ports, including major ports, face dredging problems. Many? of ?IndiaÂ’s State-run ports are struggling to honour commitments given to private cargo handlers to deepen and maintain channels for ships to dock. It is not something port authorities can control. They have to rely on private dredgers to undertake the work and cannot be faulted if the contractors fail to perform.
Nod to licensing of land to developers of 4 major ports
The Union Cabinet has approved a proposal to license land to developers of projects at four major ports under public-private partnership (PPP) mode to strengthen the ports' capacity. It cleared one project on lease basis for setting up a cement bagging plant at Cochin Port.
