The infrastructure sector, with transportation at the forefront, is a key enabler, acting as no less than a spinal cord for any economy and India is no exception. The infrastructure sector can be referred to as a set of basic services, facilities and physical installations required for smooth functioning of quality life in a country.
Is infrastructure´s golden goose on the chopping block
The PPP way of creating infrastructure in India has waned. Things got compounded by inherent risks that were stacked up upon the private sector, resulting in a bouquet of heavily invested infra projects getting waylaid and now languishing due to delays and cost overruns
There is a need for the regulator to get more teeth
Sandeep Upadhyay - MD & CEO, Centrum Infrastructure Advisory Ltd, says that a more consultative process involving the NHAI and all stakeholders, by giving due weightage to the lenders, would result in a win-win situation for infrastructure development in India.
GST may be disruptive for the next two-three years for certain sectors
In general, our view is that GST is going to bring in a lot of efficiencies as far as logistics goes and logistics also has a direct bearing on the cost of some of these raw materials which are going to be core to the development of any infrastructure project.

It seems the government has a few mega projects in hand. These really need to stand the test of time, and how the rollout is going to happen is going to be the single biggest challenge. The numbers are too big. They should get real in terms of achieving these numbers.
Implications on infrastructure
The amount of Rs.800 cr budgeted for ports and inland waterways appears to be below the potential of these sectors. The Union Budget 2016-17 lists infrastructure among one of the four priority areas.
