The Uttar Pradesh government has made it clear that the road widening project in Varanasi city will become functional in January next.
The State Minister of State for PWD and Irrigation Surendra Patel said this and stated that the government would not succumb to pressure from a section of traders, who are protesting the road widening.
The traders have been protesting against the demarcation of buildings along the roads for demolition to facilitate the road widening. When the road widened, it will give a real look of the Varanasi city by ending congestion on the roads, Patel added.
Patel said that to experience and enjoy the culture and lifestyle of Varanasi, tourists from country and abroad used to visit the city repeatedly till two decades back. But, due to massive encroachment and overcrowding, the tourists are hesitating to visit this historical city now, he regretted.
