The major focus of the Uttar Pradesh government has been on developing the state’s infrastructure, particularly in rural areas. This included construction of roads, highways, flyovers and railway overbridges in various districts.
While half of the proposed bridges have been completed, most road projects got delayed due to late release of grants. In most of the road projects, work is expected to begin in 2013 as funds have either been disbursed during November-December 12 or in February-March 2013.
A Public Works Department official said that budget session got delayed by almost four months, after which monsoon began. The government could not begin work in time and could only start in September and October last year and the work actually began from February.
Last year, the state government started the ‘Ram Manohar Lohiya Samagra Vikas Yojana’ to connect 10,000 villages with pucca roads over next five years. In 2012-13 , target was to connect 1,600 villages with population above 250.
Government had allocated Rs 1,110.15 crore for FY 2012-13 for the purpose. Major allocations were under the ‘rural infrastructure development’ fund with Rs 290.15 crore for connecting 400 habitations and Rs 500 crore under ‘special component plan’ to connect habitations of scheduled castes and tribes.
