The Union Government said 19 new atomic power plants were planned during the 12th Plan period. However, no new nuclear power projects will be launched in the remaining period of 11th Five Year Plan ending March 2012. Seven nuclear power reactors with a capacity of 5,300 MW were under various stages of construction. India now has 20 nuclear power plants which generate 4,780 MW.
