In order to cater to the increasing traffic of import and export cargo, major and minor ports in the country are upgrading their infrastructure. Port authorities must focus specifically on increasing the depth of drafts, modernising cargo handling systems, upgrading rail and road connectivity besides increasing cargo handling capacity.
There is a need to increase depth of berths in most Indian ports because large ships that can carry huge quantities of cargo cannot call directly owing to lack of adequate draft. Most Indian ports have an average draft ranging from 8m to 12m, which is not sufficient to host large ships. Following are some of the contract opportunities in berth segment.
Cochin Port Trust plans to engage a contractor for reconstruction of mattancherry wharf phase -II at Q-1 to Q-3 berths. The Andaman & Nicobar government plans to hire a contractor for extension of RCC berthing jetty in Havelock island in South Andaman. Recently, Chennai Port Trust was looking out for a contractor for widening the existing ORE berth road from first container ORE gate 33 KV sub station.
