During Jan-Mar 2013, NMDC plans to increase its iron ore production in order to make for the shortage of output in the Apr-Dec 2012 period.

Between Apr-Dec 2012, the firm produced 175.56 lakh tonne, which is down from 202.79 lakh tonne a year ago. It had produced 272.6 lakh tonnes iron ore in 2011-12, recording an eight per cent growth over 2001-11.

The company expects to raise output because of a better evacuation system, put in place in the recent past.

The company faced difficulty in raising production earlier because of evacuation constraints, mainly in Bailadila sector in Chhattisgarh, despite the fact that it jacked up its installed production capacity from 242 lakh tonne in 2005-06 to 320 lakh tonne in 2007-08.

As on March 31, 2011, the firm has 15,650 lakh tonne iron ore reserves, including in 11B and Kumaraswamy deposits, being developed now, in Chhattisgarh and Karnataka. India has 285,260 lakh tonnes of proven reserves.

The development of Kumaraswamy deposit and 11B deposit are critical for the company to meet the growing demand of the steel industry and to achieve its targeted 45 million tonne per annum production by 2015-16.
