Southern Railways suggested industrialists in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu to come together and set up a private freight terminal to move the goods manufactured or produced in this region to upcountry markets.

Sujatha Jayaraj, the Divisional Railway Manager of Southern Railways – Salem Division said this during an interactive session with industrialists in Coimbatore.

The Railways would help load the goods from such terminal. There will be no terminal charges, only loading charge, she said.

Meanwhile, she said the revenue of Salem Division this year was around Rs 520 crore. There has been a drop in freight earnings this year compared to the last, she informed.

From an average of Rs 10 crore a month, the freight earnings dropped to Rs 7-8 crore. There has been a drop in cement and steel loading. Last year, the load was around 2 million tonne, whereas it is just about 1.5 million tonne this year.
