A detailed report by the Union Highways Ministry has submitted to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on year-wise construction/expansion of National Highway (NH) since 1998. The report shows that maximum completion of work (2,693 km) happened during 2009-10 and the second highest (2,351 km) was recorded during 2004-05.

National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has been the sole agency involved in execution of National Highway Development Programme (NHDP) since inception. The compilation of facts and figures shows that only 2,360 km NH stretch was completed during 1998 and 2004.

But this caught attention of all since Atal Bihari Vajpayee launched the massive Golden Quadrilateral project. It was the most visible road development work and awarding of work during his tenure also resulted in high jump in the construction during 2004-05, though the credit went to UPA.
