The Meghalaya government is contemplating a hi-tech, environment-friendly approach to counter power deficiency in the state besides contributing to the environment through its Meghalaya Renewable Energy Policy, which is on the offing, the State Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said. He also holds the power portfolio.
He added that there is an urgent need to have a policy on renewable energy which the government is working on and the State will soon complete the draft policy, he said. He expressed hope that the policy would facilitate electrification of remote villages through solar plants.
The CM observed that with the policy in place, the government expect several solar plants to come up in the state.
This will not only cater to supplementing the existing power production but will also generate employment opportunity for the people of the state. The CM said the government would soon take steps to identify areas in the state that have potential in biomass for setting up of off-grid plants to supplement the inadequate power supply in the state.
