Within the next two months, Odisha government may renew the memoranda of understanding (MoU) signed with seven independent power projects (IPPs) earlier.

The state government decided to renew these agreements as they expired recently. Specifically, the state government may renew MoUs with GMR Kamalanga Energy, Jindal India Thermal Power (JITPL), Monnet Power Company, Ind Barath Energy, Lanco Babandh Power, Maadurga Thermal Power Company and KVK Nilachal Power.

Minister of State for Energy Arun Sahu informed reporters that the MoUs of seven IPPs whose projects have made significant progress will be renewed within two months.

Lanco Babandh Power, which signed MOU in 2006, proposed to set up 1,320 mw (2X660 mw) power project at Kurunthi in Dhenkanal district and may commission its plant by end of 2014.

As against its requirement of 1,400 acre, the company acquired 824 acre of land. Ind Barath signed an MoU in February 2009 for setting up of a 1,360 mw at Sahajbahal in Jharsuguda district and hopes to commission first unit of 350 mw by September this year and second unit by January 2014.

Sterlite Energy, which signed MoU with the state government on September 26, 2006, has commissioned all the four units of 600 mw capacity each.
