Hindusthan Shipyard (HSL), which has been suffering from lack of orders, may get contracts worth Rs 25,000 crore from the central government, Union Minister of State for Defence Jitendra Singh informed.

The state-run shipbuilding firm may get the contracts for building war ships, the minister said. Earlier, T Subbarami Reddy, a member of the Rajya Sabha and the chairman of the Parliamentary committee on forests and environment, said that HSL was suffering from lack of sufficient orders.

On May 9, Jitendra Singh would visit HSL to discuss the issue and other related matters. This was decided at a recent meeting between Jitendra Singh and Reddy in New Delhi.

During the meeting, Reddy is learnt to have outlined the urgency for placing work orders as HSL was, of late, not even in a position to pay salaries regularly to the staff.

Union Ministry of Defence controls HSL and hence it is the responsibility of the ministry to bring the HSL back on track, Reddy said.

Singh assured Reddy that work orders placed with various ship-building units in the country would be restructured to pave the way for placing orders worth Rs 25,000 crore on the HSL.
