The extension of Iran-Pakistan natural gas pipeline to India would be discussed by the officials of the Indian and the Iranian governments, media reports suggest.

It may be noted that Iran laid 900 km of the 1,600-km pipeline on its soil and both Iranian and Pakistani firms have undertaken the construction of the remaining part in Pakistan.

The gas pipeline project in Iran’s southeastern Chabahar city was inaugurated by the state on March 11 and it is projected to link Iran’s gas pipeline to that of Pakistan.

When the project is completed by mid-2014, Iran is expected to export some 21.5 million cubic meters of natural gas to Pakistan on a daily basis.

It is learnt that a high-level delegation of both India and Iran would discuss the matter soon at an economic commission meeting.

It may be noted that India’s Foreign Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid is leading an official delegation to the Persian gulf state. The delegation would meet an Iranian team led by the country’s Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Salehi.

Both the delegations are also expected to finalise about six memoranda of understanding in various economic sectors.
