The Kerala government is to construct 28 major roads in the state at a cost of Rs 10,000 crore, said the State Chief Minister Oommen Chandy recently. Each road would be constructed as a special project and talks were on to finalise the details of the new roads, half of which were coming up in the Malabar region, Chandy said.

He said this at the inauguration of the reconstruction of the 26-km Kasaragod-Kanhangad Coastal State Highway at Old Press Club Junction in Kasaragod on June 1. The work is being undertaken by the Kerala State Transport Project (KSTP). The new roads would be constructed after ensuring that the requisite funds were mobilised by availing loans at cheaper rates, he said, adding that the government would not levy toll for the newly constructed roads.

The CM said the delay and dispute over land acquisition for laying new roads were delaying projects in the State. The reconstruction of the coastal highway would be completed in 24 months.
