Tamil Nadu has requested the Union government to name the second domestic terminal at the Chennai Airport after the former Chief Minister and the then popular hero actor MG Ramachandran. To this effect the Tamil Nadu Assembly passed a resolution. The State Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa moved the resolution in the Assembly.

Just as the international terminal is named after the late CN Annadurai and the domestic terminal after late K Kamaraj, both of them former chief Ministers of the State, the expanded, modern, second domestic terminal at the airport should be named after late MG Ramachandran, the resolution said. Ramachandran had been the Chief Minister three times and had died in office.

The Vice-President of India, Hamid Ansari, inaugurated the second terminal on January 31. Jayalalithaa said she had requested the Central Government to name the terminal after Ramachandran even prior to the inauguration.

Recently, the Union Civil Aviation Minister had written to her stating that for the terminal to be named after the former Chief Minister, the Legislature has to approve the proposal, make the request to the Centre, which would be considered after the Union Cabinet approval, Jayalalithaa said.
