The Union Power Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia stated that from 2013-14 until 2015-16, all additional gas would be given to the power sector. The gas offered to fertiliser needs to be supplied, beyond that any additional gas would be given to power sector, Scindia said. An empowered group of ministers (EGoM) headed by Defence Minister AK Antony decided this on August 24.
According to the prevailing procedure, priority ranking is given to gas-based urea plants, LPG units, power plants, city gas distribution projects and if remains, for existing gas-based power plants. While about 7,818 mega watt of gas-based power plants are not operating due to scarcity of fuel, more than 16,000 mw is operating at a plant load factor (PLF) of just 23.7 per cent.
