One of India’s most trusted group Tata Sons has expressed interest to acquire Air India, if the government-owned Air India (AI) is going to be privatised. This has been stated by Ratan Tata, the Tata GroupÂ’s chairman emeritus on October 25.
Media reports say that AI was in fact formed as a division of Tata Sons and was being run as Tata Airlines till 1946, after which it became a public limited company. TataÂ’s comments come shortly after Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh said he personally felt AI should be privatised.
But the Minister has said that the current Union government is not thinking of privatising Air India. But the government does not need to be in services sectors like hotels or airlines. The consumer cares about the AI brand and not about who owns it, he had said.
Air India unlikely to get more funds after the equity infusion of Rs 30,000 crore by the government till 2020-21, the Minister had said.
