Work on the bridge across Nethravathi on Mahavir Circle-Talapady stretch of the National Highway 66 near Mangalore area is complete to the extent of 90 per cent. Work on approach roads to the bridge on either sides is only remaining.

Once the bridge is ready, travails of commuters, who bear the brunt of traffic jams on the bridge could end soon. Authorities have envisaged a deadline of March 2014 for this.

Sources in National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) said the work of laying wearing coat on the new bridge was taken up recently. The bridge is on the Talapady-Nanthoor section of the four laning project taken up by NHAI from Kundapur to Talapady.

The current bridge, a two-lane facility, was designed to carry a traffic of 12,500 passenger car units (PCU). At present, the traffic density on the bridge that connects Karnataka with Kerala ranges from 35,000 PCU during ‘normal’ traffic hours, and reaches up to 50,000 PCU during ‘peak’ hours.
