Union Shipping Minister GK Vasan on November 16 said that the Ministry targets to boost the capacity of Indian ports to 3,200 million tonne (mt) by 2020. The capacity of Indian ports, including major and non major ports, has now crossed 1,300 million tonne per annum (mtpa).
Vasan added that the Ministry’s vision and maritime agenda are to hike the capacity to 3,200 mt by 2020. Government of India has taken various initiatives to improve capacity of Indian ports and also to modernise their operations, he said. He was inaugurating 2 terminals and signing of 6 concession agreements of Kandla Port Trust.
In the current year major ports are aiming to award 30 projects- for a capacity addition of 284 mtpa, the Minister said. He added that as on date, the government has crossed over 12 projects; Total investment for this is Rs 26,000 crore, till now 3,800 crore has been spent, he added.
