The Union government has agreed recently for a proposal to extend financial assistance to Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) to meet the dredging expenditure incurred for maintenance of the river and channel.
The fiscal aid was necessary to make transactions through the Port commercially viable for users, as per a statement. The total amount disbursed would reportedly be Rs 1,501.35 crore for the period 2012-13 to 2015-16.
The extant policy for awarding dredging work in other major ports would be followed in respect of the dredging to be carried out in Kolkata Port.
