The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has installed solar panels on the cargo complex of Chennai airport, as part of its green initiative. The panels will take care of 80 per cent of the power requirement of the cargo section. The plant can generate approximately 5 MW.

Currently, the airport gets power from the state electricity board. The panels are expected to reduce the airport´s dependence on the state grid. It is also being done as part of an all-India project to have solar power at airports owned by AAI.

An MoU was signed with Solar Energy Corporation of India for the purpose in 2014 to set up a 50 MW plant under phase I. AAI wanted to use the empty space between the runway and rooftop of buildings to set up solar panels. More than 4,000 acres of land is available with Chennai airport. The panels are installed on top of the integrated cargo complex.
