Days after the first unit of the Kudankulam nuclear power plant was inaugurated, officials of the Russian firm involved in the project have said that Unit 2 will soon be connected to the power grid. The first unit at Kudankulam, which went critical, or started generating power, on July 13, 2013, was connected to the southern power grid on October 22 the same year. The unit was dedicated to the nation on August 10 this year. Unit 2 of the plant went critical on July 10 this year. With this, India now has 22 nuclear power reactors with a total capacity of 6,780 MW.
