A mechanical engineer from Delhi College of Engineering, Gupta brings 35 years of expertise spanning the entire oil & gas value chain.

Deepak Gupta has assumed charge as Chairman & Managing Director of GAIL (India) Ltd, the country’s leading natural gas and clean energy company.

A mechanical engineer from Delhi College of Engineering, Gupta brings over 35 years of diverse experience across the oil & gas value chain, combining technical depth with strategic and board‑level leadership. His expertise spans project and construction management, contracts and global procurement, technology selection, business development, and operations & maintenance (O&M).

Since joining GAIL as Director of Projects in February 2022, Gupta has spearheaded multiple high‑impact initiatives, including natural gas and LPG pipelines, gas processing units, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) infrastructure, and green energy projects aligned with India’s net‑zero goals. He oversees O&M of a vast network of more than 20,000 km of pipelines, compressor stations, and process plants. Under his leadership, GAIL completed the Dabhol Breakwater Project of Konkan LNG Ltd, enabling all‑weather operations and advanced digital transformation initiatives to enhance agility and transparency.

Gupta has also played a pivotal role as a board member of GAIL joint ventures, including Talcher Fertilisers Ltd, ONGC Petro‑additions Ltd (OPaL), South‑East Asia Gas Pipeline Co. Ltd (SEAGP), Green Gas Ltd, and Maharashtra Natural Gas Ltd. His contributions span strategic goal setting, stakeholder alignment, corporate governance, and future‑ready business planning.

Earlier, during his 32‑year career at Engineers India Ltd (EIL), Gupta led landmark projects under complex conditions, including the world’s largest single‑train Dangote Refinery & Petrochemical Complex in Nigeria, HMEL’s Mega Petrochemical Complex at Bathinda, and GAIL’s Petrochemical expansion at Pata. He also steered Mongolia’s first greenfield refinery project, strengthening India’s global energy diplomacy.

A thought leader and prolific writer, Gupta has authored several technical papers and articles on critical packages and fast‑tracking project execution.
