Indian Railways is in the midst of one of its most ambitious modernisation drives, with visible gains in infrastructure, freight and technology. Electrification now covers nearly the entire broad‑gauge network, saving billions of litres of diesel and reducing import dependence. Dedicated Freight Corridors are easing congestion and cutting transit times, while semi‑high‑speed Vande Bharat trains and indigenous safety systems such as Kavach highlight India’s growing technological capability. Station redevelopment, digital ticketing and multimodal integration under Gati Shakti are reshaping the system, signalling that the capital programme is translating into tangible improvements in capacity, reliability and efficiency.
The transformation, however, remains uneven. Premium passenger services have modernised faster than the wider network. Safety technology is advancing but still far from universal deployment, and financial sustainability lags behind physical modernisation, with freight earnings subsidising passenger operations. Subsidies of around `600 billion and operating ratios above 98 per cent underline the challenge. In short, the Railways has delivered substantial progress in infrastructure, freight and rolling stock, but the broader goals of passenger experience, safety, network capacity and commercial sustainability are still a work in progress. Our Cover Story, ‘The Long Transformation Ride’, highlights the successes and identifies the gaps at the world’s fourth‑largest rail transporter by route length.
The upcoming Mumbai‑Ahmedabad High Speed Rail corridor is another focal point. Former Indian Railways officer Lalit Chandra Trivedi stresses that lessons from India’s first bullet train project must be institutionalised, while also learning from China’s achievements and mistakes, to ensure seamless rollout of future corridors. As the network expands and transforms sectors from logistics to manufacturing, Adecco India’s Deepesh Gupta highlights the need for employees with the right skills to sustain synchronised operations.
In an exclusive interaction, Praveen Kumar, Managing Director of Dedicated Freight Corridor Corp. of India Ltd (DFCCIL), assures that future corridors, such as the proposed East‑West DFC, will have significantly shorter completion timelines through better planning, early clearances, modular construction and smarter contracting. These themes will be discussed at the Infrastructure Today Railways Conclave on August 25 in New Delhi.
With the conflict in West Asia showing no sign of easing, Blue Energy Motors’ Anand Mimani argues that now is the time to roll out electric trucking to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. On water security, Skipper Ltd’s Siddharth Bansal urges that a water‑deficient India must invest in storage and bridge infrastructure gaps through modern reservoirs, efficient rainwater harvesting and restoration of traditional water bodies.
This issue also features two insightful interactions with leaders in their domains. Ajay Kapur, Global CEO of Suzlon Group, affirms his target of 70 GW assets under management and 40 per cent wind market share by FY2031, as the company evolves from a turbine manufacturer into a wind‑first, full‑stack renewable energy solutions provider. Agendra Kumar, Managing Director of Esri India, foresees AI‑GIS integration accelerating to deliver bespoke solutions at scale across hundreds of applications.
There is more in the issue. Happy reading.
