In his career spanning over 33 years, Suresh M Ramchandani, currently the Joint MD, Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation, has been associated with various organisations working on the infrastructure development with a pride of direct association with public projects. These include PWD, MMRDA, MSRDC, Uttrakhand State Infrastructure Development Corporation Dehradun etc.
Development of World Bank assisted state highways in Maharashtra besides design and construction of a variety of National Highway bridges like Chulband, Kanhan and Borgaon rivers on NH6 and Khuni River on NH7 has been a matter of great satisfaction to him giving a sense of achievement during a long public service. Replacement of the damaged steel roller-rocker bearings of the Wunna River Bridge on NH 7 in 1990 with neoprene bearings by lifting 1,100 mt three span continuous superstructure was a landmark work completed by him with speed and economy and without disturbing or suspending the highway traffic.
He was proudly associated with the development of roads in the Mumbai city when the link roads like Santacruz-Chembur Link Road, Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road, missing portion of Andheri-Ghatkopar Link Road and the New Link Road were developed at a rapid pace .In addition, the widening of Andheri-Ghatkopar road to full DP width, facilitating commencement of the first metro rail project, JP Road, and SV Road facilitating faster movement of traffic in the suburban areasùhe accomplished this in a short duration of two years. He was instrumental in quick rehabilitation and resettlement of project affected persons for MUIP and MUTP projects to the fullest satisfaction of the World Bank.
Currently, through MSRDC association with the prestigious Yashwantrao Chavan Expressway and the Bandra-Worli sea link involving the challenges of maintenance of these facilities and capacity augmentation thereof, he is tirelessly working to provide a sustainable infrastructure to the future generations. To this end, the extension in the form of the Versova-Bandra sea link towards north and the Worli to Nariman Point sea link to the south are other major assignments.
Increasing the lane capacity leading to the enhancement of the level of service on the Mumbai- Pune Expressway in the Ghat section is another challenging project. Construction of the first long road tunnel with special safety features like fire sprinkler systems for approximately eight km length is being attempted through the Borghat-hills supplemented by cable stayed bridges at a height of about 200 m in the deep valleys. This is definitely quite adventurous for MSRDC and its enthusiastic engineers. With this the road capacity will be enough to cater to the expected growth of the traffic during the coming two decades.
