Cargo handling at the New Mangalore Port Trust
rose 12.93 per cent to 33.61 million tonne during April-February of 2012-13 as against 29.76 mn t in the year-ago period.

It may be noted that the port surpassed the total traffic handling of 2011-12 in the first 11 months of 2012-13.
The total cargo handling was 32.94 mt during the entire 2011-12.

During the first 11 months of 2012-13, the port witnessed growth in handling coal, iron ore fines, crude oil, petroleum products and other cargoes.

The coal cargo handling has seen a jump of 85.88 per cent. The port handled a total of 6.32 mn t (3.40 mn t) of coal during the period.

This included 2.24 mn t (1.27 mn t) handled by Udupi Power Corporation (UPCL), and 4.07 mn t (2.13 mn t) handled by other users in hinterland areas. Based in Udupi district, UPCL operates a 1,200 mw thermal power plant.

During this period, the port handled 12.83 mn t (11.97 mn t) of imported crude oil for Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals (MRPL). MRPL is a major user of the port.

Between Apr-Feb 2012-13, the port handled 1.49 mn t of iron ore fines for KIOCL, which operates an iron ore pellet manufacturing unit in Mangalore. This is a 49 per cent increase compared to the corresponding period of last year.
