According to an official press release, cargo volume at Ennore Port may rise 14 per cent to an all-time record of 17 million tonne (mn t) in 2012-13 from 14.96 mn t in the previous financial year.
The cargo volume handled by the port surpassed the target of 16 mn t fixed by the centre for the financial year 2012-13 on February 28. The target for the entire financial year was achieved one month prior to the close of the financial year.
Meanwhile, the official website shows that the port authority plans to develop additional coal berths for handling additional coal requirement of TNEB or JV of TNEB.
It also plans to develop second and third container terminal in a dock basin that can be created to the east of General cargo berth. Further, it plans to develop a second Marine Liquid Terminal to the south of the first terminal.
With all the development included in the Master Plan, it is envisaged that Ennore Port will be able to handle an annual traffic of 126 million tonne plus 2 lakh cars after the projects are complete.
The company has devised the above development plan based on the demand in the trade and potential of the port.
