Depreciation of Rupee hits port development: Vasan
The Union Shipping Minister GK Vasan recently said that the falling value of rupee will stroÂngly affect port development works in the country and its shipping industry. The present economic crisis in India has affected employment opportunities of even cadÂets trained at the Shipping Corporation of India (SCI)-run Maritime Training Institute (MTI), the Minister added.
Boost to liquid cargo capacity at New Mangalore port
As the Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals (MRPL) commissioning its single-point mooring (SPM) system
at New Mangalore Port last week, the port's liquid cargo handling has been boosted. Single point mooring is an offshore facility that serves as a mooring point for tankers to discharge their cargoes. For now, MRPL is served by two berths at the port to handle crude oil and petroleum products.
Iron ore shipments from Australia up as China buys more
Cargoes including iron ore shipments from AustraliaÂ’s Port Hedland have increased to China in August. Hedland is worldÂ’s biggest bulk terminal. In August, exports totaled 27.4 million tonne from 26.6 million tonne in July and 22.8 million tonne a year earlier.
NMPT registers a growth of 12.25% in cargo
In the first five months of 2013-14, the New Mangalore Port (NMPT) recorded a growth of 12.25 per cent in cargo handling. The port handled 15.76 million tonne of cargo from April-August as against 14.04 million tonne in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal (2012-13). Crude oil and coal contributed to the growth in port's cargo handled during the period, said the port's Chairman P Tamilvanan.
Stalling of Chennai port road project will impact TN: official
In Tamil Nadu, the Rs 1,815-crore Chennai Port-Maduravoyal elevated link road was conceived for speedy evacuation of containers from Maduravoyal and now it has been stalled by the State Public Works Department stating there was a deviation in the alignment from the approved project. Stopping of the project will have a very big impact on Tamil Nadu and the countryÂ’s economy, cautioned Vijay Chhibber, Secretary, Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
Luggage scanner to function soon at Beypore port
In Kozhikode's Beypore Port security would further be strengthened with the operation of the luggage scanner by mid-September. The Department of Ports had bought the scanner, along with several other surveillance instruments.
Global slowdown hits ports sector as well
The global economic slowdown has also hit the country's port sector. officials in the port industry say the same. Things are not likely to be rosy in the immediate future given the continuing global economic slowdown. It may not be the right time to start a container terminal as there is no visibility of cargo, says an official at Kattupalli Port, near Chennai, from where the first regular container service (from Kattupalli Port) will commence from September 19 to Singapore and Port Klang.
TN halts work on useful Chennai port e’way
The Tamil Nadu government has asked the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to hold the Rs 1,800 crore 19-km Chennai Port-Maduravoyal Elevated Express Corridor project as the NHAI has deviated from the approved alignment. The project is on hold since April 2012. Now, the port users say they will face huge hardships if Chennai Port-MaduraÂvoÂyal elevated corridor project is not implemented.
Dip in Cochin port July exports
Exports through the Cochin Port declined 10 per cent in July while imports rose 11.75 per cent, according to Cochin Chamber of Commerce and Industry's Cexports and imports statistics. July import of commodities, components and equipment through Cochin Port and Vallarpadam International Container Trans-shipment Terminal (ICTT) was 2.4 lakh tonne, compared to 2.1 lakh tonne in the previous-year month.
