Mamata Banerjee's West Bengal government has cleared the hurdles before the proposed Rs 2,600 crore Joka-BBD Bag Metro Railway project undertaken by the Indian Railways. The 16.72 km line will connect the southern fringes of the city with the central business district. Construction of the project was stalled since end 2010 following objections raised by state-owned Calcutta Tramways Company on grounds of potential financial loss.
