Coal India (CIL), NMDC and the Government of West Bengal have proposed to form a JV to make liquid fuel from coal. The ministry is examining CIL’s proposal and is keen in foraying into the coal-to-liquid project. For CIL, diversifying into the coal-to-liquid business will help it to capitalise on strong demand for liquid fuel and insulate the country from volatile crude prices. West Bengal government, or its nominated agency, will be given a minority stake in the JV between CIL and NMDC since the block—Deocha-Pachami in Birbhum district —that has been identified for the project, falls in West Bengal. This block has estimated reserves of about 19-20 billion tonne, sufficient to meet the requirement of such a mega project for 40-50 years.
