It is learnt that the naval vessels INS Kabra and INS Kalpeni with a crew of three officers and 39 sailors each are deployed regularly for coastal surveillance of Kerala.
INS Kabra is commanded by Lieutenant Commander Chetan R Upadhyay, a marine commando while INS Kalpeni by Lieutenant Commander Vikas Jha, a specialist in navigation and direction.
These ships are propelled by water jet and can achieve a top speed of over 35 knots, and have excellent manoeuvrability.
Fast Attack Craft are ideally suited for high-speed interdiction of fast-moving targets, a naval press release said. The main armament of these ships is a 30 mm CRN 91 Gun.
These two ships belong to Southern Naval Command which is based at Kochi. The ships would visit Kollam, Vizhinjam, and Beypore for a day each, as part of the Navy day celebrations.
On November 24, INS Kabra and INS Kalpeni will be in Kollam port while on November 25 INS Kalpeni will be in Vizhinjam and INS Kabra will visit Beypore the same day.
The Navy Day is celebrated every year on December 4, commemorating the attack on Karachi by Naval missile boats during the 1971 war.
INS Kalpeni and INS Kabra named after the countryÂ’s islands, are indigenously designed and built at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers, Kolkata.
