The board of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) cancelled three road projects which have seen no progress in implementation despite being awarded. The authority decided to cancel at least five such projects including the above three projects. These five projects constitute 40 per cent of highway projects that are yet to take off even after award, reports indicate.
The board feels that road developers should not be allowed to hold the contracts if they fail to fulfil the basic requirement of putting performance guarantee within six months after winning projects.
NHAI may even cancel contracts for projects which are delayed for statutory clearances or undue demands from state like shifting of toll plazas.
NHAI has so far scrapped four projects in Goa and Kerala due to land acquisition issues and has now decided to let go off two more this year in Kerala, according to a senior NHAI official.
