The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has sought the Centre to allow it to take over the poorly run Gurgaon expressway from the concessionaire. NHAI has also supported the public’s demand of doing away with toll collection on the expressway.

NHAI Chairperson RP Singh has asked the Centre to select the best option to end the daily nightmare of jammed toll booths that lakhs of stressed commuters have to put up with. Singh has written over the issue to the Ministry of Roads, Transport and Highways. Significantly, he has supported the growing public demand to end tolling.

Singh told the Ministry that tolling in municipal areas causes inconvenience to public and there is a strong case in public interest to remove toll plazas from municipal limits, he said. He also said the concession agreement of the highway has a provision for taking over the project from the concessionaire, DSC.
