More than 1.2 million households together earned ₹4.21 billion through the sale of surplus power in FY2024‑25, translating to an extra income of around ₹3,500 per year per household.
The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY), the world’s largest domestic rooftop solar programme, has crossed a landmark milestone with more than five million households now benefiting from rooftop solar installations across the country.
Achieved in just over two years, this milestone marks a sharp acceleration compared to the 794,000 rooftop solar installations recorded over the previous decade. It reflects the rapid implementation of PMSGMBY since its launch in February 2024 with an outlay of ₹750.21 billion. The initiative is the Government of India’s flagship rooftop solar scheme under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Venkatesh Joshi, wrote on X, “The impact extends beyond homes, with over 25,000 Central Government buildings and more than 81,000 State Government buildings now powered by rooftop solar, strengthening India’s journey towards a clean, sustainable and energy‑secure future.”
The programme is currently adding 100,000 new households every six days, making it one of the fastest‑growing clean energy initiatives globally. The pace of installation has increased 3.2 times over the last nine months, rising from 5,038 installations a day in October 2025 to nearly 16,328 installations a day in July 2026. In July alone, 506,000 households benefited, the highest monthly figure since the scheme was launched.
To support this momentum, ₹280.24 billion in subsidy has been released directly to beneficiaries through Direct Benefit Transfer. Nearly 1.9 million households are now receiving zero electricity bills, easing the financial burden on families. Rapid Solar Expansion
Under the Utility Led Aggregation model, 160,000 installations have been completed for marginalised households across four states, with rollout sanctioned in 12 states. This is enabling low‑income households to access rooftop solar while helping states reduce their tariff subsidy burden. Concessional loans at 5.75 per cent, benchmarked to the repo rate plus 50 basis points, have been sanctioned for 2.19 million applicants, of which 1.75 million installations have already been completed through loan financing. Jan Samarth integration has enabled paperless loan processing.
The scheme has also created a wide vendor and employment ecosystem, with 34,219 registered vendors, of whom 29,469 are active, operating nationwide. Over 232,000 people have been trained under capacity‑building programmes supporting the rooftop solar value chain. Cumulatively, 14.8 GW of rooftop solar capacity has been commissioned under the scheme so far.
PMSGMBY runs on a 100 per cent online, end‑to‑end digital process, from application to subsidy release, with no physical paperwork or office visits required from consumers.
