To provide banking services to localities with 2000 or less population in Himachal Pradesh, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has set a target of opening 800 new bank branches in the state by 2014-15. General Manager of RBI, Shimla, RS Negi said that the RBI had achieved target of financial inclusion after opening bank branches in these having more than 2000 population in 2012.
Negi said this at Bharat Nirman Public Information Campaign in Sunni near Shimla. Now RBI is covering villages having less than 2000 census especially places where people have to trek upto 15 to 20 km distance from their home to get banking services, he added.
Leading banks imparting services in the state have been asked by the RBI to conduct survey to open up new bank branches in rural areas, he added.
