India has launched the worldÂ’s largest programme of public-private partnerships in road construction. The goal is to build as many as 7,000 km of new trunk roads per year. One of these projects was implemented on National Highway 1. NH-1 is one of the oldest and longest highways in India, running from New Delhi in a north-westerly direÂction, passing through Amritsar and continuing into neighÂbouring Pakistan. Soma Enterprise has been commiÂssioned by the National Highways Authority of India to upgrade the previously four-lane highway to six lanes over a length of 291 km between Panipat (Haryana) and Jalandhar (Punjab).
As many as nine machines from the Wirtgen Group are in operation on this project. While a W 2000 cold milling machine from Wirtgen removes damaged asphalt layers in one section, as many as five Vögele SUPER 2100-2 pavers are pressing ahead with expanding the lanes in another. “In addition to that, we have three SUPER 1800-2 pavers in continuous operation. One paver has 12,000 hours on the clock but runs smoothly all the same,” says E Subash, Wirtgen India’s Service Manager-in-charge. He is part of a team of six service engineers who will support the customer until the project has completed. Two service vehicles from Wirtgen India are available on an exclusive basis for servicing and to ensure the fast supply of spare parts.
