From its inception in 1983 as Supreme Asphalts Private Ltd to a company with an annual turnover of Rs 9,170 million in FY 2010-11, Supreme Infrastructure has come a long way. Vikram Sharma, MD, Supreme Infrastructure India Ltd, responds over email to questions by Pratap Vijay Padode.
QA / QC methods, project management and control tools, safety manuals, is the hallmark of company's operations, how do these help you to achieve your goals?
Supreme Quality Management System (QMS) is based on ISO: 9001-2000 norms and is certified by QS Zurich AG. The QMS is subject to a bi-yearly audit by the QS Zurich AG in addition to the periodic audits conducted internally and audits by client bodies. Management of all the project sites under execution is subject to the Quality Management System, as defined in the quality policy and quality manual, with appropriate quality assurance programmer. Suitable quality control measures are adopted in accordance with approved quaÂlity assurance plans at the project sites supported by trÂained quality control personnel and well-equipped site laboratories. The company conducts in-house training programmers for staff members and workmen at the sites periodically. Supreme conducts its construction business through well established environmental and safety manÂagement system.
The company recently completed the work of the first 3-level flyover at Transport Nagar Chouraha, Jaipur ahead of schedule. Please provide some insights into the technological aspects of the project that made this possible.
This is the first 3-level flyover in the state of Rajasthan. The flyover, built at the crucial intersection between the Jaipur Agra highway (NH-11) and Jaipur Delhi highway (NH-8) at the Transport Nagar crossroads, has long witnessed congestions. The Rs 65 crore JDA venture seeks to ease traffic congestion at Transport Nagar crossing, which opens up to four different direÂctions leading to Delhi, Kota, Agra and the city. Slip lanes on all four sides, other instruments of junction improvement and improvisation of drainage system of the area as well as for new constructed elements are a part of the project. A diaphragm wall for construction of underpass will be constructed for the first time in Rajasthan.
How does the newly set up regional office at Kolkata help the company to monitor its business in the North East? How challenging project execution is in this region given its mountainous terrain?
The North East (especially Orissa and Bihar) have witnessed a surge in our investment despite the effects of the global economic downturn and some negative repÂutation it acquired in the aftermath of the deveÂlopÂments which resulted in the calling off of the projects proposed for those areas. The state governments are now empÂhasising industries in areas with mining / plant infraÂstructure through coal / cement / iron and power plants that are considered backward and have uncultivable land. By setting up industrial clusters that can use comÂmon infrastructure, we would boost verticals like roads, bridges, power and others.
Parts of Bihar, Orissa and the North East have been identified as Industrial Growth Zones, based on the availability of non-agricultural land, presence of industry and infrastructure, where large-scale manufacturing units can be set up. While most companies are not comfortable in this terrain due to various fear factors, we are successfully operational.
The company not only aims to be an end-to-end construction company, but also the most preferred infrastructure partner in India. What will be your strategy towards achieving this?
SIIL plans to step in to the new business areas in the construction sector like development of port facilities, power plants, transmission, mining and tunnelling. The company's overall strategy is based on a continuous improvement process of setting objectives, measuring results, and providing feedback to facilitate further groÂwth and progress. SIIL attempts to achieve its growth objects by profiling the right skills and people, consistency in execution skills, undertaking projects involving high degree of engineering skills, focusing on suitable BOT projects, and building up common strength through joint ventures.
