As India expands its global trade footprint and modernises its logistics infrastructure, the country’s major ports have recorded an impressive 4.3 per cent annual growth in cargo handling, increasing from 819 million tonnes (MT) in FY 2023-24 to 855 MT in FY 2024-25. Turnaround time in Indian major ports is a matter of concern
The current cargo handling capacity of Essar Ports is 150 MTPA. Essar Ports specialises in development and operations of ports and terminals for handling liquid, dry bulk, break bulk and general cargo.
Govt plans transparency in shipping, logistics
The government might soon propose amendments to the Multimodal Transportation of Goods Act, 1993. The aim is more transparency in the shipping and logistics sectors and to discourage container freight stations from overcharging both importers and exporters, said two government officials with direct knowledge of the matter.
Implementation has always been the issue
Roads connecting the docks and air cargo complexes of container freight stations are in a very bad condition, hence this creates very bad congestion. There should be convenience; intermodal transport will be successful only when we have proper rail and road connecting infrastructure

DCI to dredge at Vizag port
Cargo handling is likely to go up significantly at Visakhapatnam port with the authorities deciding to issue work order to Dredging Corporation of India (DCI) for dredging in the northern arm.
Vizag port handles 58 mt in 2013-14
The Visakhapatnam port has handled a little over 58 million tonne of cargo during 2013-14. The port has suffered loss of cargo during the past few years due to several reasons. Stiff competition from the neighbouring ports, the many ongoing projects in the port in
recent years affecting cargo-handling and the fall in iron ore exports are some of the main reasons for slump in the fortunes of the port.
Efficiency as precursor to greening
Although the concept of green ports is emerging as a necessary infrastructure solution for ports worldwide, India has to first step up its levels of cargo handling efficiency and logistics connectivity with the hinterland before it can match international standards in the 'greening' processes.
