The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) was set up in 1986. Since then till 2008, only five waterways could be declared as National Waterways. Work could be started on only three of them: National Waterway or NW-1 that is the Ganga National Waterway, NW-2 that is the Brahmaputra Waterway and NW-3 comprising the backwaters of Kerala.

Govt to utilise Cochin Port to export wheat
High demand for Indian wheat abroad is going to benefit the Cochin Port Trust, which is said to be struggling due to the slowdown. The Union government has proposed to enhance export of wheat and for this the Cochin Port is going to be utilised. South Korea, Bangladesh and Ethiopia are the major buyers of Indian wheat, Union Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies KV Thomas said recently.

Rs. 40,000 cr oil refinery, trading hub in Kochi port
As part of an ambitious deep-water outer harbour project, the Union government-owned Cochin port in Kerala has started work on setting up a 20 million tonne export- oriented oil refinery and oil trading hub with private funds. The port is planning 16-m depth outer harbour, so large petroleum product tankers with a capacity to load 1,30,000 tonne can dock.

Panel to study high handling charges in Cochin Port
A sub-committee has been formed to look into high handling charges at Cochin port. Trustees of the Cohin Port Trust (ChPT) who met at Kochi on October 30 decided in this regard. The committee comprises representatives of the community of clearing and forwarding agents, steamer agents, Customs House agents, export organisations, 2 labour trustees of the port as well as secretary of the port and traffic manager.
