Cargo traffic at major ports up
Cargo traffic at 12 major ports recorded a marginal rise of 1.78 per cent at 555.5 million tonne (mt) during 2013-14. The cargo handled by these ports stood at 545.79 mt in 2012-13.
Mundra crosses 100-mt mark in cargo throughput
Mundra port in Gujarat has handled 100 million tonne (mt) of cargo during 2013-14, joining an elite club of global ports that have reached this mark. Mundra also became India's biggest port in terms of cargo handled. Mundra port surpassed Kandla port, located just 60 km away on the Gulf of Kutch in Gujarat, in terms of the amount of cargo handled.
Chemoil Adani interested to develop bunkering facility
To develop a bunkering facility at Chennai port, Chemoil Adani, a joint venture between Chemoil and Adani, has expressed its keen interest. The Indian Oil Corporation is the only supplier of bunker Ăâ fuel oil used aboard ships Ăâ in Chennai. Mundra, Colombo and Kochi ports have developed bunkering facility. The Kandla port has also taken initiative to improve this facility, say media reports.

The Union Minister of Shipping GK Vasan has dedicated two terminals of the Kandla Port to the nation. Speaking on the occasion at a function in Bangalore recently he said that this port since its inception and especially in the last decade has grown from strength to strength fuelling growth of Kutch, Gujarat and India.

Kandla port takes over ABG’s container terminal
A failed container terminal has been taken over by the Kandla port from ABG Infralogistics after depositing a security amount worth Rs 110 crore as lenderĂâs dues with the registrar of the Ahmedabad high court where the case was decided recently.
Deep sea exploring ship dedicated to nation
The Rs 650-crore deep sea exploration ship, Samudra Ratnakar, was dedicated to the nation by the Union Minister for Mines Dinsha Patel at Kandla Port in Gujarat on October 12. The ship is currently docked at Kandla Port. The ship is the first of its kind in the south east Asia.

The Union Government has cleared five port projects in various ports. Four of the five projects are to come up at Chennai Port, Cochin Port, Kandla Port and Haldia Dock Complex in Kolkata.
