Kolkata Port Trust (including Haldia ) witnessed 14.65 per cent decline in cargo handling at 28.86 mn t during April and December 2012. Haldia alone recorded 17.31 per cent drop in cargo volume at 20.2 mn t, official data shows. The other ports recording negative growth included Visakhapatnam 16.04 per cent at 44.2 mn t; and Chennai 4.87 per cent at 39.89 mn

In order to reverse the decline in cargo handling at Kolkata Port, the authority planned to invest Rs 15,000 crore on various development projects till the end of the 12th Five Year Plan (2016-17).
