The transformation of India´s roads seems to be a reality now. In February this year, the government pledged to invest Rs 80,000 crore in the sector in the Budget. And now the target is to award 10,000 km by March 2016.

MEP Infra bags two NHAI toll collection projects
MEP Infrastructure Developers has bagged two projects from National Highways Authority of India for collection of toll for a year at Surjapur Toll Plaza in West Bengal and Dasna Toll Plaza in Uttar Pradesh, the company said.

Roads and highways sector has observed a significant growth over the past few years compared to the other heavy civil engineering sectors such as power and water. The growth has come, especially in the EPC mode of the business, whereas PPP and annuity based projects have also witnessed a few bids.

The major policy initiatives of MoRTH in recent past are as follows:
Exit Policy: The cabinet recently allowed private developers to exit all operational BOT projects two years from start of operations.
Logistics corridor likely in few years
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is starting a massive exercise to diagnose the deficiencies in the infrastructure and system. It will come up with solutions for seamless movement of big carriers or trailers on the highways that connect six-seven major ports such as JNPT in Mumbai, Kandla and Haldia, besides key manufacturing hubs.
Six laning of Bengaluru-Chennai expressway
The revised final feasibility report for six laning of the Bengaluru-Chennai expressway is under preparation and the funds likely to be incurred on the project will be finalised after its completion.
