Bidding for TN, Odisha UMPPs scrapped
The Power Ministry has scrapped the bidding process for two ultra-mega power projects of 4,000 MW each proposed to be built in Odisha and Tamil Nadu after all private players walked out, leaving State-run NTPC and NHPC as the sole contender for each project.

Upcoming ultra mega power projects (UMPPs) in the country have become a hope for orders of capital goods companies at a time when the order inflows have dried up. Now companies like Larsen & Toubro and Thermax are eyeing orders worth around Rs 24,000 crore from a two mega power projects in Orissa and Tamil Nadu.
Rajasthan to have worlds largest solar plant
Worlds largest solar plant has been planned in Rajasthan to generate 4,000 MW near the Sambhar lake. The solar plants first phase is estimated to be completed by 2016. It is planned to sell electricity from the solar plant at Rs 5.50 per unit. According to a government statement, the proposed solar projects capacity is about three times Indias total solar power capacity.

The Union government has launched an initiative for the development of coal-based Ultra Mega Power Projects (UMPPs) each with a capacity of 4,000 mw. Sixteen UMPPs have been identified in various parts of the country. Out of these, two UMPPs are identified for being located in Tamil Nadu.
