In Chennai, the slow progress of flyover construction work at Tirumangalam junction on Jawaharlal Nehru Salai has made life for pedestrians and motorists miserable. The flyover at the intersection of second Avenue Anna Nagar and MogapÂpair road – Inner Ring road will pave way for easing traffic congestion on the busy Jawaharlal Nehru Salai.
Tirumangalam junction happens to be the gateway to western parts of the city like Mogappair and Ambattur and thus a majority of MTC buses stop there. Hundreds of pedestrians come to catch their buses at the bus stops from different parts of the city. The ongoing construction has reduced the carriage width of the road which makes it difficult for pedestrian to negotiate the heavy traffic on the road in absence of pavements.
While traffic diversions were made on the stretch, the highways department failed to make any arrangement for safe movement of pedestrians. The junction witnesses traffic congestion in the evenings. The carriage width of the road is small and vehicle flow is heavy. Crossing the road is very dangerous, complain the area mommuters. A senior highways department official said they would look into the complaints of pedestrians.
The authorities are hoping to open the flyover for traffic by August or September.
