GAIL has stalled pipeline projects worth Rs 3,000 crore due to land acquisition problems. The state run company has sought the Environment Ministry’s help is resolving the issue. The company said its Dadri-Bawana-Nangal project would be delayed by six months, while the Dahej-Vijaipur project will be five months behind schedule if the land acquisition issue was not resolved at the earliest. The Kochi-Bangalore-Mangalore pipeline project will also be delayed.
The recently proposed land acquisition bill bars the government from purchasing land for private projects. However, it seeks to allow land acquisition for ‘public purpose’.But critics say the loose definition of public purpose is open to misuse. GAIL had earlier plaÂnned to double its pipeline netÂwork to 11,195 km by 2011 by building new lines to connect LNG import terminals on the west coast and laying new lines to service demand in the north and east.
