Experts suggest government to promote coastal shipping in the country as it is an energy efficient and comparatively cheaper mode of transport that could greatly relieve the pressure on rail and road transport.

There are several companies active in the sphere of coastal shipping in India and one among them is Poompuhar Shipping Corporation (PSC) which looks after the shipping requirements of Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB).

It started chartering the vessels from 1979 onwards. Ennore and Tuticorin are the ports in Tamil Nadu to which coal loaded at Haldia, Paradip and Vizag through PSC owned vessels and chartered vessels are moved. Vessels are topped up at Paradip after initial loading to maximum draught at Haldia.

Weekly Insight learns that the company plans to engage a contractor for ship repair yards in connection with VI intermediate survey and dey docking and repairs of its ship at Chennai.
