Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways (RTH) Sarvey Sathyanarayana informed Lok Sabha that the government awarded 1,010 km of national highways (NH) so far in 2012-13.
This is hardly 11.5 per cent of the target of 8,800 km under National Highways Development Project (NHDP) for this year.
Delay in obtaining forest or wildlife and railway clearances besides problems in law and order and land acquisition hindered financial closure for 38 projects, he said.
He also informed that the government received bids for 145 km and bids for another 1,535 km length have been invited.
He added that the delayed projects are closely monitored and periodically reviewed at the headquarter as well as in the field units for expenditure completion.
On the steps undertaken by the government to minimise delays, Sathyanarayana said that regional offices headed by Chief General Managers have been set up by National Highways Authority, besides establishment of special land acquisition units in the states.
In order to clear bottlenecks relating to shifting of utilities, land acquisition and so on, the government set up high powered committees under the chairmanship of chief secretaries of state governments.
