The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has been giving special treatment to its roads, especially to strengthen and improve durability of the roads. The civic body is now protecting roads falling under its jurisdiction by doing ‘micro-surfacing treatment’ as per road-wise suitability.

NDMC’s initiative was taken after consultancy from Central Road Research Institute (CRRI). Micro-surfacing is a polymer modified, asphalt emulsion based, dense graded, cold mixed, quick setting, asphalt resurfacing material.

By design it chemically changes from a semi-liquid material to a dense cold mix material that is able to carry normal traffic within one hour after application.
Chairperson of the council Archna Arora on Monday said the consultancy was obtained for the road strengthening and out of the 41 roads, CRRI recommended maintenance protective layers for 34 roads by doing micro surfacing treatment.

Over the years, layer after layer of resurfacing of the roads, the thickness of them have increased. The problem specifically was more in colonies where the road level was higher than the ground level at places, she said adding that this was another reason to choose micro surfacing of roads.
